Hybrid Learning Report

Each of the topics reported have come directly from students’ experiences throughout the online learning implemented as a result of COVID-19. Overall, the tone of the document predominantly highlights constructive criticism and calls for improvement of delivery. Students have struggled with multiple aspects of learning to do with the transition from in-class to online. While these anecdotes are extremely valuable and valid, we recognize that most students who would respond to emails or attend town halls are those who have experienced difficulty learning this way. We want to note that not every experience has been negative and generally, people recognize this is a unique and difficult time. With that being said, much of the information and experience presented here is of extreme value both for the evaluation of impacts of online learning and the planning for learning to come in the future at VIU. We would additionally like to thank the students who came together at the town halls, and who shared their experience in response to our call; both sets of responses were shared with a critical eye to the challenging aspects of hybrid learning, and will help to improve the learning experience at Vancouver Island University for current and future students alike.
