The Students’ Union prides itself on its past successes as well as the successes of our provincial students’ union (the BCFS) in advocating on behalf of members, including the 2020 creation of the BC Access Grant, $3.26 million in funding for BCcampus for the development of open education resources (OERs), the elimination of interest on BC student loans, tuition free adult basic education reinstated in BC, the elimination of the sale of bottled water at VIU and the 2% cap on tuition fee increases in BC, which has been in effect for over a decade and a half.

Goals: We are calling on the BC government to…

• Freeze and progressively reduce the cost of all tuition fees
• Increase funding to the BC Access Grant
• Cap international student tuition fee increases at 2% annually
• Invest $500 million annually in public post-secondary institutions’ operational funding

Action: Students are invited to share their stories using the campaign’s story collection tool, email decision-makers utilizing the updated email tool, and join the movement to build momentum for change.

fairness for
international students

Goal: Provincial regulation of tuition fees for international students, including a cap on increases as well as an improved provincial international education strategy with better supports and services for students.

open textbooks now!

Goal: Sustained funding to BCcampus for the creation of Open Education Resources (OERs) and working to improve on campus adoption of OERs at VIU.

Actions: A Week of Action was held in October 2021 with advocacy on Open Educational Resources and interviewing faculty who have moved to OERs.
