Cover Contest!! For the 2024 - 2024 Membership Handbook & Dayplanner
We are looking for creative submission for the cover of your next VIUSU Members’ Handbook & Dayplanner! All submissions must be in by April 12th and abide by the sizing and image detail information below. Show us what YOU want to see on your handbook & Dayplanner next year!
First Prize is $500, First Runner Up receives $250, and the last Runner Up will walk away is $125! Submission & contest details are below along with VIUSU logo files. This years cover page theme is Welcoming.

Contest Opens: March 11th
Contest Closes: April 12th at 4PM
Contest Guidelines:
Submission can be a photo or any form of digital art, photos of art in non-digital medium is also acceptable
You are encouraged to include your artist signature or name on your submission
Design Colour(s): must be in CMYK, not RGB
Cover Page Dimensions: 5.25’’ x 8.1875’’ (Design must be vertical)
With roughly 0.25” on the Left side of the page taken by the ring coil bindings.
A PDF example of the ring coil cut outs is provided below.
Please have your submission represent the over theme named above.
Submission Should reflect VIU Campuses and/or experiences
You can choose to include the Information listed below or not. However if you choose not to include this information you are allowing us to add this information onto your submission if it is selected as the winner (we will send you a proof if you leave it to us add the following information. The information below can be included in any font you choose, however please indicate which font(s) you’ve included within your submission email

You can choose how to showcase the years of the planner in any format so long as it is clear ( ex: 2024/25, 2024-2025, 2024 & 2025 etc. )
“VIUSU” or “VIU Students Union”
Not required if you include one of the Logos Provided instead
“Local 13 of The BC Federation for Students”
Not required if you choose to use the logo provided with said information included (all logo titles including BCFS will contain this information)
“Handbook” and either “Dayplanner” OR “Day Planner”
You can choose how to say ‘and’ or if you say ‘and’
Possibilities include but are not limited to: and, &, -, +, /, \, |, etc.
Fine Print & Submission Information:
Please provide your submission in one of the following formats format: JPEG, PNG, PDF or INDD (Adobe InDesign)
File Details:
Cover dimensions: 5.25’’ x 8.1875’’ – design must be vertical
Image resolution: any images used must be 300 DPI/PPI or higher
Colour: Design should be in CMYK, not RGB
Use of black for fonts: any font under 72 pt should be 100% black (not 4/c type)
Use of black for large areas: designs with a lot of black or dark navy are not recommended as they risk not printing well, but if you do use a design with a lot of black, is it recommended to use the following values (C:75, M:68, Y:67, K:90)
Use of white for fonts: any white text should be set to knock out, not overprint.
Type Safety: all type should be held back 0.1875’’ away from the trim line on all edges, included in the link below is a plastic spiral file that can be used to test that nothing will be punched by the handbook spine.

You submission can be added as an attachment to your email or you can provide a link (such as a google drive link) if the file is too large
Within your submission email please include the following information;
Your name (as well as the name of any other contributors to your submission)
Your best email contact (only if it’s different from the email submitting your entry)
The best phone number to contact you at
Your preferred method of contact (phone or email)
Please also include the names and ages of any people displayed in your submission (if applicable) as well as a contact to ensure their consent in being used on the cover.
