Dare to Bear the FROST Polar Plunge challenge!

Make sure to tag @viustudentsunion so we can re-share! We encourage all students, faculties, and departments to participate! *See disclaimer below*

Instructions:

  1. Record a video of you challenging at least two VIU friends, faculty or staff before you plunge into the ocean, lake, or stream.

  2. Post your video to your Instagram, tag @viustudentsunion & whoever you've challenged by January 23rd at midnight!

  3. We'll select 3 lucky winners at random to receive a free gift (TBA)! *Must be a current VIU student and reside in Canada to receive gift by mail*

Have you been challenged and want to plunge with other students? Join us for a group polar plunge on Friday, January 21 at 10:00am on Departure Bay Beach (look for the blue VIUSU tent)! This event will wrap-up our Frost Winter Festival series and will include free coffee and hot chocolate from Drip Coffee Social, as well as prizes for best costumes. See group plunge event listing for more information.

Tips for a successful plunge for first-timers:

  1. Have some food before hand and go with a toque and comfy warm clothes over top of your swim suit. Bring thick warm socks, a big towel, and a reusable mug for coffee or hot chocolate after your plunge.

  2. Don't wait too long to go in. You don't want to get too cold on the beach ahead of time!

  3. Going in we recommend being as quiet as possible, it can help to adjust if your mind is calm. You should go in steadily but not running or jumping, but you can do it however you want. We recommend wearing your toque and keeping your head out of the water. You can also wear water shoes in, which protects your toes. Don't stay in longer than 1 minute if this is your first time.

  4. Get out and wrap up right away/get dressed on the beach. Keeping your hat on and drinking a hot drink afterwards will go a long way.

*Disclaimer: Do not participate in this challenge if you have an underlying medical condition or if this goes against advice from your doctor. Cold water immersion sends your body into the shock response cycle and can be dangerous for those with heart conditions and other health issues. Do your own research to learn the related health risks and benefits!
