Surfrider VIU is a club chapter of Surfrider, a worldwide non-profit organization focused on ocean conservation. The Surfrider organization is "dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves, and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network". What does that mean for a student club? At Surfrider VIU we aim to monitor and maintain the coast of Nanaimo through water testing, beach cleanups, waste reduction efforts on campus, and zero-waste education. All of our data is given to Surfrider to provide a picture of what is happening off the shores of Vancouver Island. We also try our best to create fun events like craft nights, documentary screenings and outdoor activities. Our aim is to make ocean conservation an accessible, non-discriminatory and fun experience for VIU students. So, if you're someone who loves the ocean as much as we do, come join in!
