A Recap of the BC Federation of Students’ AGM: Key Decisions and New Leadership

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BC Federation of Students (BCFS), held from January 18-21, was a pivotal event for the Student Movement, marked by crucial decisions and the election of new leaders. This year's AGM focused on several key areas of business:

Student Advocacy and Initiatives:

Discussions centered around enhancing student life and addressing issues like affordable housing and mental health support. Members engaged in strategic planning for upcoming campaigns, reflecting a strong commitment to student welfare.

Financial Management:

The Union's financial health was reviewed, including budget allocations for various student programs. This session was crucial for ensuring the transparent and effective use of student funds.

Policy Amendments:

The AGM saw the proposal and adoption of several policy changes aimed at improving Union operations and student representation.

The AGM also facilitated workshops and discussions, allowing members to delve into topics like equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Union. These sessions provided valuable insights into how the Union can better serve all student segments.

Culminating the event were the elections, marking a significant change in the Union's leadership:

  • Cole Reinbold was elected as the Secretary Treasurer. Their prior experience as Chairperson is expected to bring valuable insights to their new role.

  • Sarah Mei Lyana emerged victorious as the Director-at-Large. Her election is seen as a step towards more inclusive and representative leadership.

  • Leah Vaisanen won the position of Indigenous Caucus Chairperson, a critical role in ensuring Indigenous voices are heard and respected in Union decisions.

These elections signify a new chapter for the Union, with fresh perspectives and renewed energy driving our mission forward. The newly elected leaders are poised to tackle the challenges ahead and work towards a more vibrant, inclusive student community.
