The Students’ Union prides itself on its past successes as well as the successes of our provincial students’ union (the BCFS) in advocating on behalf of members, including the 2020 creation of the BC Access Grant, $3.26 million in funding for BCcampus for the development of open education resources (OERs), the elimination of interest on BC student loans, tuition free adult basic education reinstated in BC, the elimination of the sale of bottled water at VIU and the 2% cap on tuition fee increases in BC, which has been in effect for over a decade and a half.

Summary: Join our Letters to Deb Campaign to explain how the lack of student consultation on campus is affecting you! Letters will be mailed to VIU President Dr. Deb Saucier to explain what students are feeling during such an unprecedented time at VIU.

Goal: To demonstrate the undeniable need for student consultation on decisions made directly impacting the student experience.

fairness for
international students

Goal: Provincial regulation of tuition fees for international students, including a cap on increases as well as an improved provincial international education strategy with better supports and services for students.

open textbooks now!

Goal: Sustained funding to BCcampus for the creation of Open Education Resources (OERs) and working to improve on campus adoption of OERs at VIU.

Actions: A Week of Action was held in October 2021 with advocacy on Open Educational Resources and interviewing faculty who have moved to OERs.
