QUESTION 1: Aborginal Students’ Representative Title Change
Whereas it is important to recognize the significance of inclusive and respectful language and understand the importance of accurate representation, the term 'Aboriginal Students’ Representative' may not fully capture and honour the diverse Indigenous communities and their contributions within our institution.
Therefore;
Do you support changing all references to 'Aboriginal Students’ Representative' to 'Indigenous Students’ Representative' in the bylaws to better reflect the cultural diversity and contributions of Indigenous Students at our institution?
Yes, I support the proposed change to update the reference to 'Indigenous Students’ Representative.'
No, I do not support the proposed change to update the reference to 'Indigenous Students’ Representative.'
QUESTION 2: Election Schedule Amendment
Whereas the current VIUSU bylaws with two (2) elections scheduled annually have been observed to result in potential confusion and ambiguity among students aspiring to participate in elections, undermining the accessibility and fairness of the electoral process; and
Whereas the existing dual-election system necessitates a significant allocation of staff and board time for planning, organizing, and executing elections, as well as board orientations and director onboarding, diverting resources and efforts that could be better directed toward enhancing the quality of services, advocating for student interests, and hosting impactful events;
Therefore;
Do you support amending VIUSU’s bylaws to adopt a more streamlined and unified approach by implementing a single annual spring election?
Please select one option:
Yes, I support the proposed changes to update the election bylaws as outlined.
No, I do not support the proposed changes to update the election bylaws as outlined.
QUESTION 3: Board Meeting Modernization Amendments
Whereas the current bylaws stipulate a meeting schedule of 20 meetings per year,
Whereas there is a growing recognition that students today have more demanding schedules and commitments, making it challenging to maintain active participation in an excessive number of meetings,
Whereas it is essential to strike a balance between effective governance and the well-being of students, ensuring that their engagement remains meaningful and sustainable,
Therefore,
Do you support the following changes to VIUSU bylaws to better align with the needs and constraints of our student body:
Adjusting the meeting schedule from 20 meetings per year to 12 meetings per year to accommodate the increased demands on students' time and commitments.
Eliminating the requirement to post paper copies of agendas and minutes in the Students’ Union Offices, reflecting current digital practices and reducing unnecessary resource use.
Ensuring that records of minutes and agendas are maintained digitally in the Students’ Union office, promoting streamlined operations and environmental sustainability.
