A Recap of the Spooktacular 2023 Westwood Lake Witch Paddle
October is always a magical month, filled with the anticipation of Halloween and all things mysterious. This year, and for the third year in a row, the VIU Students' Union took that magic back to Westwood Lake Park with the 2023 Westwood Lake Witch Paddle. On Sunday, October 29th, students, paddlers, and families, in their costumes, gathered at Westwood Lake for a day of fun on the water, at the park, and along the trail. This event not only provided a great time for the community but also raised funds to address food insecurity on the VIU campus and in Nanaimo. Let's delve into the details of this event.
With the promise of adventure and excitement, participants of all ages donned their spookiest witch costumes and brought their paddle boards and kayaks to the second beach area of Westwood Lake. The atmosphere was energetic as our witch paddlers prepared to launch onto the water at 11:15 am. Before launching, we took a group photo which brought out lots of laughter and witchy cackles! The event was free for all, although VIU students collected donations to tackle food insecurity, with the proceeds going to Nanaimo Loaves & Fishes Food Bank and Nanaimo Foodshare.
The Westwood Lake Witch Paddle was not just about paddling. Attendees were treated to a variety of exciting activities, including:
A Spooky Character Hunt where kids searched for VIU Student Club members who were dressed in spooky costumes hidden along the trail.
Two food trucks serving delicious treats and a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches. Thanks to Mizu Real Fruit Ice Cream and Jacks Grilled Cheese Food Truck.
Live music from DJ Nova Jade who set the mood for a magical day.
A zombie theme’d bouncy castle that had kids bouncing with joy. Thanks to Inflatafun VI.
Face painting by the talented Brenna from VI Facepainting, transforming little ones into their favorite characters.
Pumpkin painting for a creative and colorful twist on traditional pumpkin carving.
Hot chocolate and halloween treats for all.
The chance to vote on the @viustudents’union instagram account for "Nanaimo's spookiest boat," adding a competitive element to the event.
The event wrapped up at 2:00 pm with the return deadline for the spooky character search maps. Kids had a chance to win gift cards to Airhouse, Romper Room Indoor Rock Climbing, Exit Escape Room, and WildPlay.
The 2023 Westwood Lake Witch Paddle was a success, thanks to the active participation of over 50 witches on the water and hundreds of children who enjoyed the additional spooky activities. The weather, which was warm and sunny, added to the enchantment of the day.
In the spirit of community and giving back, the event raised $400, which was donated to Nanaimo Loaves & Fishes Food Bank and Nanaimo Foodshare. Additionally, VIUSU made an extra donation to Nanaimo Search and Rescue in appreciation of their invaluable assistance at the event and their continuous contribution to our community.
The 2023 Westwood Lake Witch Paddle was an enchanting day of fun, where the community came together to celebrate Halloween and make a positive impact on those in need. It's events like these that remind us of the power of community and the joy that comes from giving back. With the success of this year's event, we can't wait to see what next October holds. Until then, let's keep the magic alive and continue supporting those who need it most.
