The VIU Hidden Heroes Club is a team of self motivated and mutually supportive individuals who wish to make a difference in the community by doing things that any ordinary person could do, and finding ways to encourage others to do the same thus inspiring positive change.
The Club has been found on the foundations of the Hidden Heroes Education Society, which is a non-profit organization that exists to inspire all of us to seek out the best in ourselves and each other, and to strive to make a difference; one person, one family, one community at a time.
In today's fast paced world, many of us have become so engrossed in our search for success that we go to the extent of breaking rules and going against ethics and morals. The club members will attempt to be strong, positive role models acting to counteract this behavior.
Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser involving students at almost 65 university and college campuses across Canada. In 2008, Shinerama attracted more than 35,000 student volunteers, from coast to coast students shined shoes, washed cars, coordinated raffles and barbeques, as well as numerous other events, in support of Cystic Fibrosis research and care.
Cystic fibrosis (CF), which attacks the lungs and the digestive system, is the most common, fatal, genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) is a world leader in the fight against CF. Canadian researchers discovered the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis in 1989 and they continue to play a leading role in the race to develop new treatments for the disease.
Shinerama students have raised more than $19.5 million to support the fight against Cystic Fibrosis since the campaign began in 1964. In 2008, enthusiastic ‘shiners’, raised more than $953,000, a record breaking year, to help fund CCFF research and treatment programs -- proving that by working together, students really can make a difference in their communities, and in Canada.
Our goal is to get Vancouver Island University involved in Shinerama, to allow students to participate in a really fun fundraising campaign with a very important purpose. Shinerama is a great way to meet new people, plan and participate in exciting fundraisers and to be part of something really special while making a difference.
The Vancouver Island University Community Peace Garden began as a daughter project of Solutions: A Sustainability Network. An official plan (designed by horticultural students) was launched in April 2009. Since then, the project has begun to gain momentum, therefore increasing the need for more eager helping hands.
The purpose of this club is ti initiate student involvement as well as promote the VIU Community Peace Garden Project. Through a series of instructive workshops, members will have the opportunity to learn about such things as urban food growth and universal accessibility. This club also offers the opportunity for members of varying skills to lead their own workshops, thus contributing to the project's focus on community building.
The foundational components of the garden hope to be completed within the next year, however, the project will continue to grow as a learning, gathering, and therapy centre, allowing those interested to take care of their own polots or use the space for special events.
