The Art and Design Club

The Art and Design Club is the official club of the Art Department. The club organizes and promotes artistic and creative activities on campus. These include life drawing classes, campus projects such as a mural, promotion of art students' skills and work, and Progressions.

Progressions is the year end student art show for the VIU Art Department, organized entirely by students in the Art and Design Club. This showcases students' works and is open to the public. Every student has the opportunity for their work to be displayed. The art is available for sale, with the proceeds going directly to the students.

In order to help pay for the activities and events of the club, various fundraisers are undertaken, such as Pizza Tuesday ($2.50/slice or $5 for 2 slices and a drink!), so come out and support the club!

The Art and Design Club meets every Tuesday at Noon in Building 325, Room 123. Drop ins welcome.

VIU English Students' Association

The goal of the English Students’ Association is to bring students together to socialize and network. We host fun events, learn from each other’s experience, chat and eat goodies. Every week ESA hosts an event, gathering, or seminar, invites all their members, and welcomes anyone to bring a friend. We have an exciting schedule of events planned this semester including movie nights, a bake sale, a spooky poetry reading and presentations by our professors on the research they are doing, which may expand into an entire series in the Spring semester. Last year we had a colloquium at which students were able to present their papers and we plan to repeat this as well as publish a small journal of the papers presented. Our schedule of events can be found in the student lounge of the Arts and Humanities building 345 where we hold our meetings every Monday at 4pm.

Liberal Studies Club

The Liberal Studies Club promotes the importance of literacy and recognizes the role written word plays in our society. By holding events centered on provoking conversation, we wish to engage everyone in friendly debate. Join us in the Liberal Studies lounge or around a bonfire and help create a positive and encouraging community to further our understanding of literature, philosophy, history and anything else that comes to the table. We also recognize that sometimes we need our friends to remind us that being a student is hectic, and doing things a little less serious can be important, too. We welcome all, from any department and any background - join us! ** Because no one should have to read alone**

VIU Geographic Course Union

A course union devoted to the promotion of the discipline of Geography, in both streams of urban growth and natural resource management. The focus will be on interacting with fellow geographically-minded individuals in a social setting, and participating in Geographic activities, such as adventurous outdoor ventures, career fairs, and opportunities to attend conferences in related disciplines.

Previous club activities have included environmental movie and documentary rights, annual camping trips, participation in the Western Division of Canadian Association of Geographers conference at VIU, afternoons spent playing disc golf, and general good times in a fun, like-minded setting.

Club Education

Club Education, commonly known as “Club Ed,” is a student-run organization that represents the active students who are enrolled in the Education program’s various sections. The main purpose of Club Ed is to organize, plan and run professional development as well as social activities and events. By keeping students informed and involved, we intend to build community among all Education program sections.
Club Ed’s major focus is on providing support for all students in the Education program. With office hours throughout the week, there are opportunities for students to seek help and bring in their suggestions for anything from assistance in creating lesson plans to ideas for activities/support they would like to receive from Club Ed.
Along with office hours, Club Ed has a variety of ways for students to contact executives. Email addresses will be made available on the Club’s website (coming soon) and Facebook group (Club Education – Vancouver Island University).

Earth Science Course Union

The Earth Science Course Union is committed to providing an exciting and safe learning experience for students to observe geologic phenomena both close to home and far away. Off-campus trips in previous years have included Yellowstone National Park, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Garibaldo, Quadra Island, Texada Island, Lone Cone, Horne Lake, Hornby Island, Gabriola Island, Ammonite Falls, Mt. Benson, run of river projects, Long Beach and Kennedy Lake Mine. On campus activities include rock cutting opportunities, gold panning workshops, and get-togethers/discussions at the Students’ Union Pub.
There are opportunities to network with people with similar interests, working earth scientists, and other students who have worked in earth science jobs. Connecting with upper-level Earth Science students, those who have returned from field studies, VIU faculty, and members of the community provides great opportunities to learn more about identifying rocks, fossils and other features of interest.
Upcoming trip possibilities include the west coast, Sea-to-Sky tour visiting the BC Mining museum, Strathcona Park (Landslide Lake) camping and hiking, Gabriola Island, Horne Lake Caves, a camping trip in The Nimpkish, and Mt. Benson. There is a rumor of a San Andreas Fault trip over Reading Week. We also plan to organize tours of renewable energy projects on Vancouver Island and elsewhere.
