In conjunction with the Canadian Federation of Students’ campaign “We Ride: Students for Improved Transit”, VIUSU has Launched a localized Transit campaign to encourage YOU to think about transit, and get involved in the campaign to improve access and convenience for students across Nanaimo.
“Nanaimo Transit…The Amazing Ride?” encourages you to submit your most uncanny story involving public transit in Nanaimo, and win one of three great prizes. From missed transfers, to bizarre occurrences, and everything in between, this contest is designed to get you thinking and motivated about crucial changes that need to be made to Nanaimo’s Regional Transit System.
Prizes include:
1st prize = custom built commuter bike ($300 value)
2nd prize = top notch bus survival kit consisting of an ipod nano, umbrella, watch set 5 minutes ahead, and riders guide ($200 value)
3rd prize = bus survival kit (umbrella, watch set 5 minutes ahead, riders guide)
Accompanying the contest is a petition drive calling for three main things; a rapid route connecting North and South Nanaimo with high frequency service and stops at major intersections across the city; increased frequency on secondary and residential routes; and improved bus stops that include upgraded safety standards and service amenities. Watch for petitioners around campus, or riding the bus, and join the call for accessible transit!
Submissions should not exceed 500 words (250 if photo submission), and preference will be given to competitors who suggest solutions to their bad bus experiences based on the three criteria called for in the petition. Submissions can be handed in person to the Student Union Building during office hours, or sent electronically to external@viusu.ca. Deadline for submissions is March 1.
