KNOW YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES - Codes of Conduct

All Vancouver Island University students are responsible for adhering to the Academic and General Codes of Conduct as established by the University Board of Governors and Education Council. These Codes cover such issues and cheating, harassment and conditions of the learning environment. These and other policies and procedures can be reviewed using the link below.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS - You Can Appeal Decisions You Don't Agree With

It is your right to appeal decisions on admission, grades, alleged misconduct, or the interpretation of any policies on the above. You can contact the Students' Union for assistance and advice on launching appeals or if you have questions about the appeal process.

The first step is an informal appeal to the individual who made the decision or interpretation. If satisfactory resolution is not possible at this level, the program Dean must be consulted. If again no resolution is possible, a formal appeal may be initiated.

A formal appeal of grades must begin within 15 days of distribution of the official statement of grades from the Registration Centre.

Appeals on other issues must be initiated within 10 normal business days of the occurrence of the incident or the decision being appealed.

Any formal appeal must be accompanied by a $25 administrative appeal fee. If the appeal is upheld, the fee will be refunded.

A complete copy of each appeal procedure is available from the Registration Centre or via the link below.

Someone to Represent Your Rights

The student advocate position was established to assist students with academic and non-academic concerns. At present Susan Baker is our student advocate.

As the Student Advocate Susan can:

-      Provide information, answer questions, and clarify university policy and procedures

-      Assist and support students through their concerns regarding faculty, staff, administration or any other on campus services

-      Assist and support students through the appeals process

-      Work with the institution and the Students’ Union to address concerns that students feel present barriers to a balanced learning environment

GET ADVICE BEFORE YOU TAKE ACTION

Students are encouraged to book meetings with the Student Advocate before they take action on a matter. By accessing the information and experience of the Students' Union prior to moving forward with an appeal, a student can better understand their rights, the appeals structure and can access information on previous appeals of the same nature.
