Your Dues at Work for You

Though not every service of the Students' Union or Federation is equally beneficial to every student, every student can and does benefit from the existence of the Students' Union. Whether taking advantage of services such as the Bookswap or the International Student Identity card, or benefiting from the advocacy work of the Students' Union, members have the opportunity to earn back Students' Union membership fees and even make money on their membership. For more information on our work on behalf of our members please visit the successes page under campaigns and lobbying or click here

For more information about Students' Union and other dues, or to find out more about how you can make the most of your participation in the Student Movement, visit the Students’ Union office or email info@viusu.ca.

Students' Union Dues

When registering, every student pays two fees in addition to their tuition fees: a Students' Association Fee and an Activity Fee. The Activity Fee is NOT collected by the Students' Union but instead by the University-College.

Students' Association Fees are collected by the Students' Union on behalf of itself and several other organisations to which all students belong. The monthly breakdown is as follows:

Nanaimo Students
$10.93 Students' Union and Canadian Federation of Students Fees
$2.96 Students' Union Building Fund
$0.72 Students' Union Club Fee
$1.01 Navigator Newspaper Fee
$0.27 Radio Malaspina Fee

Parksville, Powell River, Duncan Students
$8.72 Students' Union and Canadian Federation of Students Fees
$1.01 Navigator Newspaper Fee

Each of these fees was set democratically by students through either a general meeting or referendum.

Accountability

To ensure that students' money is effectivley managed, the Students' Union participates in an annual financial review process which is the same the same process the University is required to complete for the BC Government to ensure that it remains financially accountable . Every year an external accounting firm conducts an official audit of the Students' Union's bookkeeping and financial procedures to ensure that no mismanagement has occurred and that the Students’ Union’s finances are transparent. Once complete, the audit is presented to Students' Union members at the annual general meeting and made available in the Students' Union office.

To view a copy of the most recent audit, just visit the Students' Union Office in the Students’ Union Building (193).
