Only those students with existing, equivalent extended health and dental plans are able to opt out of the Students’ Union Health and Dental Plan. The BC Medical Services Plan is not an extended health and dental plan and therefore does not qualify as an equivalent coverage.
At the beginning of each of the fall and spring semesters, students will be able to opt-out online. Once the online opt-out form is completed, the data will be assessed by a plan administrator and the opt-out processed in the University-College’s database. The online form will ask for contact information in addition to the name of the equivalent coverage provider and plan number.
Those who do not wish to use the online opt-out system or those who enrolment dates do not permit use of the web based system can opt-out in person at the Students’ Union Office in Building 193 on the Nanaimo Campus. Like the online system, opting-out in person involves the completion of a form that will contain contact information in addition to the name of the equivalent coverage provider and plan number. Once the form has been completed in full and assessed by a plan administrator, the opt-out will be processed in the University-College database.
Before each opt-out can be accepted, a plan administrator reviews each form submitted to ensure the completion of all fields of information and to assess opt-out qualification. If the information contained on a form is found to be inaccurate or incomplete, the applicant will be contacted to correct the form. Further, the Students’ Union reserves the right to require proof of equivalent coverage by a set deadline and to reinstate the health and dental plan fee if no such proof is forthcoming.
PLEASE NOTE: information provided is managed under the provincial and federal privacy laws and are used for the assessment and processing of opt-outs only.
